Spending limits
Set a monthly spending cap and see how you're doing — one number, across your spending.
Overview
Spending limits give you a single monthly spending target. Unlike Budgets, which are per category, a spending limit applies to your overall (or configured) spending. Finn tracks how much you've spent against that limit and tells you when you ask.
Key benefits
- One number: One limit for the month — simple to think about and stick to
- Conversational: Set, check, and change your limit by texting Finn
- Monthly status: Ask anytime for your spending vs. limit and how much is left
- Flexible: Update the limit whenever your situation changes
How spending limits work
- You set a monthly limit (e.g. $2,000 in total spending).
- Finn tracks your spending (based on your connected accounts and the rules for what counts).
- You can ask for your monthly spending status anytime — how much you've spent, your limit, and how much headroom you have.
Limits reset by month. If you don't set a limit, Finn won't track one until you do.
Setting a limit
Tell Finn your target:
"Set my spending limit to $2,000 a month"
"I want to cap my monthly spending at $1,500"
"My spending limit is $3,000"
Finn will confirm and use that as your cap for the current month (and future months until you change it).
Checking your status
Ask how you're doing against your limit:
"How am I doing on my spending limit?"
"How much have I spent this month?"
"Am I over my spending limit?"
You'll get a summary: spending so far, your limit, and whether you're under or over.
Updating your limit
Change the amount anytime:
"Change my spending limit to $2,500"
"Update my monthly limit to $1,800"
Finn will apply the new limit going forward.
Spending limits are different from Budgets (per-category) and Goals (savings targets). Use a spending limit when you want one overall cap for the month.
