Budgets
Set spending limits by category and see how you're doing — all through conversation with Finn.
Overview
Finn Budgets let you set a monthly (or custom) spending target for categories like dining, shopping, or entertainment. Ask Finn how you're doing anytime and get a clear picture of whether you're on track or over budget.
Key benefits
- Category-based: Budget by what you care about (e.g. restaurants, groceries, subscriptions)
- Conversational: Set, check, and change budgets by texting Finn
- Clear status: See how much you've spent vs. your limit and how much is left
- Flexible: Update or remove budgets anytime
How budgets work
- You set a target amount for a category (e.g. $400 for dining this month).
- Finn tracks your actual spending in that category from your connected accounts.
- You can ask for your budget status anytime — Finn will tell you how much you've spent, how much is left, and whether you're on track.
Budgets are based on your transaction categories. Finn uses the same categories as your transactions, so spending is grouped consistently.
Setting a budget
Tell Finn what you want to cap and by how much:
"Set my dining budget to $300 a month"
"I want to budget $500 for groceries"
"Cap my entertainment spending at $150"
Finn will confirm the budget and the category. You can have budgets for multiple categories at once.
Checking your status
Ask Finn how you're doing:
"How am I doing on my dining budget?"
"Am I over budget on groceries?"
"What's left in my entertainment budget?"
You'll get a quick summary: how much you've spent, your limit, and whether you're under, on track, or over.
Updating and deleting
Change the amount:
"Change my dining budget to $350"
"Update my grocery budget to $600"
Remove a budget:
"Remove my entertainment budget"
"Delete my dining budget"
Once deleted, Finn stops tracking that category against a limit (your transactions are still visible when you ask about spending).
Budgets work alongside Spending limits (a single monthly cap across categories) and Goals (savings targets). Use budgets when you want to control spending by category.
